Look at my title which suggests that it is hard to find the full story about depression medication. Depression seems to be almost endemic and the CDC in America estimates that up to 40 million people will suffer from this debilitating condition at some point in their lives.
Watch for these signs if you reckon you or a loved one might have depression. A doctor’s visit is essential but here are some warning signs. sombreness and doom, pessimism, discouragement, helplessness and a consummate lack of any will to do activities which were once a pleasure could be the alarm bells. If it seems that the reaction is out of proportion to the event or it is going on for a considerable time, then this may be another indicator.
Anti depressant medication now usually is composed of what we call SSRIs which are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. These have the effect of increasing the levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter in the brain which is a key element in our moods.
When you start taking this depression medication, lots of strange things can come up as the drug takes some time to kick in. Some people never get used to the side effects and many report ups and downs, insomnia, pains in the chest, nausea, anxiety. Celexa and Ativan can raise levels of Prolactin and cause breast pain. While some patients are fine and respond well to anti depression medication, there are a large number of patients who get even more low when they have to cope with the side effects. Is it actually a case of taking a sledgehammer to crack a nut?
The other alarming thing about this depression medication is that although the fear of a rise in suicides may have been enlarged, the fact is that the drug companies themselves do not know how exactly these drugs work on our brains. There are also lots of questions about the long term effects and nobody wants to go round like a zombie for years.
I think this is why patients are now turning to alternative treatment for depression rather than the hyped up anti depression medication. There are too many unanswered questions whereas natural remedies for depression are much less devastating and just as effective in my view.

While the causes for postpartum depression are currently unknown, the symptoms that are associated with this trouble are directly tied to hormonal changes. The female hormones progesterone and estrogen are believed to be responsible for the postpartum depression. During pregnancy, the amount of these hormones increases greatly and then suddenly drops after the woman has given birth. The process is similar to the PMS (Premenstrual syndrome), when small changes in hormone levels can affect the woman’s moods.
Thyroid may also be an important factor in triggering postpartum depression. The thyroid is a secretor that regulates how the body uses the energy from eaten food. A low thyroid level can cause postpartum depression symptoms such as depression, fatigue, insomnia and anxiety. Unlike other postpartum depression causes, the thyroid factor can be easily revealed and treated with medication from a health care provider.
Other things can contribute to postpartum depression, such as:
* Feeling fatigue after given birth and not having adequate”sleep may keep the new mother from getting back on her feet for weeks to come. This is more so if the mother has had a C-section delivery.
* questioning that she will be a good mother to your baby and feeling overwhelmed with the task.
* The amount of stress collected from the changes that take place in the mother’s life. Changes in work and in home routines may lead mothers to believe they have to be “super moms” to handle it all.
* Having to cope with the loss of identity (who the mother was before the baby was born), loss of control over her life, of a slim silhouette and feeling less attractive.
* Having much less time for herself or time to spend with the baby’s father and having to stay inside for long periods of time.

Depression and anxiety affect more than 20 million adults every year. With depression symptoms ranging from mild to severe, more people are seeking help for the treatment of depression and anxiety than ever before. Treatment options for depression and anxiety include prescription medication, hormone therapy, psychotherapy, and a variety of other specialized therapies.
Since each case is unique, there is no “one-size-fits-all” cure for these sometimes debilitating mental disorders. But when natural remedies are used in conjunction with other types of treatment, treatment success rates can soar!
Regardless of whether or not you are in a professional depression or anxiety treatment program, there are a number of things that you can do to help yourself.
Natural remedies for these mental disorders don’t get a lot of attention so they’re often overlooked as successful treatment options. Fortunately the situation is changing. Natural remedies for depression and anxiety are most effective when used in conjunction with professional therapy. For many patients, that combination is enough and additional treatment methods usually aren’t required.
Here are some proven tips for getting depression and anxiety under control:
Banish Negative Thoughts
Although it’s nearly impossible to prevent negative thoughts from creeping into our minds, negativity makes depression and anxiety worse. Try to offset these thoughts by focusing on the positive things going on in your life. Positive, happy thoughts trigger the brain to release “feel good” chemicals that combat depression and anxiety naturally.
Avoid Associating with Negative People
Sharing your life with people who are negative only strengthens your own negative feelings. Likewise, sharing your life with positive, upbeat people strengthens your positive feelings. The choice is voluntarily so choose the people who can help you and avoid the ones who can’t.
Journal Your Way to Relaxation
Take a few minutes each day to write in a journal. You don’t have to create a novel, just jot down your thoughts on the positive and negative aspects of each day and note what made you depressed and what made you happy. At the end of each week take time to reread what you’ve written. Before you know it you’ll have a clear picture of the things that lift you up and which ones bring you down. As soon as possible, start avoiding the things that affect you negatively and start doing more of the things that make you happy.
Tap Into the Power of Affirmations
Affirmations are uplifting statements that you say out loud. Because affirmations are spoken as if the results you are seeking have already occurred, they work by programming your subconscious to make true that which you have already told it to be true.
Feel free to create your own affirmations or use these:
“I deserve the happiness that I feel every day.”
“I think only positive and uplifting thoughts.”
“I am in control of my moods and outside issues do not affect me negatively.”
“I love myself and I deserve the love of others.”
Summary
You are in control of your thoughts and feelings. Depression and anxiety are not unbeatable conditions that you are powerless to control. Start by following the tips presented in this article and then seek the help of an expert in the field of anxiety and depression management if you require additional assistance.

Depression is a mood disorder characterized by a pervasive sense of sadness and hopelessness, and inability to enjoy life. Symptoms can include, but are not limited to: fatigue, irritability, crying spells, sleep disorders, forgetfulness, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, and thoughts of death or suicide or suicide attempts. People dealing with depression need to know that recovery is possible and that it is more than a case of the “blues” that they can shake with willpower, as well-meaning friends or relatives may suggest. Depression is a real disease.
Anyone can suffer from depression, though women tend to get it more than men. In children, the rates are similar between the sexes. Those with a family history of depression are more likely to have it. Severity can range from situational depression, which is caused by a stressful life event; to dysthymia, a mild but long-lasting form of depression; to major or clinical depression. There is also seasonal depression that occurs when exposure to natural light is limited, postpartum and premenstrual depression that occurs due to hormonal changes, and other less common forms.
The cause of moderate to severe depression is now widely agreed to be biochemical imbalances in the brain. While very mild or situational periods of depression may resolve on their own, most cases require some kind of intervention. Traditionally, modern psychiatry offered only talk therapy and medications with severe side effects for sufferers. Since the discovery of serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI’s) like fluoxetine (Prozac) in the 1980′s, many people have found relief from the symptoms of depression.
But with society leaning much more toward “greener” lifestyles, holistic methods of health are more popular than ever. There are several tried-and-true herbal remedies for depression. St. John’s wort, for example, has been used extensively in Europe for decades, prescribed by doctors and psychiatrists for their patients suffering from depression. Study after study – over twenty – have proven its effectiveness. Gingko biloba also helps with depression by increasing blood flow to the brain, which increases mood and memory.
Other herbal remedies for depression can be used to alleviate some of the symptoms of depression that can greatly affect one’s quality of life. Valerian root, for example, can help promote the high-quality sleep that is so often elusive when depression hits.
The importance of a healthy diet and the benefits of exercise in maintaining and improving health can never be overemphasized. In addition to promoting overall fitness and endurance, exercise increases production of the body’s “feel good” hormones, which elevate mood. A balanced diet containing omega-3 fatty acids, B vitamins and other essential vitamins and minerals can improve mood and alleviate depression.
Untreated depression can be devastating to individuals and their loved ones. But there is help available that can lift the veil of depression and allow the sun to shine in again.
