I have been having repeated dreams of committing suicide. The dreams don’t actually involve the final event of pulling the trigger, but they do involve holding a gun to my head.
I’m waking up to these dreams and they are interfering with my ability to get a good nights rest.
I have a therapist and a psychiatrist. I also am on anti-depressants already.
In the evening, do not allow yourself to watch or read about anything violent or depressing. Watch some funny movies, or read a funny or pleasant story. It sounds corny, but I love to read Reminisce magazine and learn about the lives that my parents and grandparents lived. It’s lighthearted reading that doesn’t evoke any negative thought patterns. Also, don’t eat anything after 8 in the evening.
Now, tell yourself over and over "I would never do something stupid like kill myself". Do this for several days. Say it with conviction.
Before you go to bed, thank God for all of your blessings. He really wants to know that we appreciate what He has done for us. Don’t let your mind drift to things that you feel He hasn’t done for you – just thank Him for the good stuff. Do you have a roof over your head? – thank Him. Do you have food to eat? – thank Him.
