Question by : how can i get hold of AntiDepressants?
I don’t want to go to my doctor because i don’t want to have to reveal the reason why i am depressed. I’ve slipped in and out of depression for the past 5 years. But for the past few months i can be happy one minute, sad lonely and isolated the next, I want to die but i have hope things will one day get better.
I know from Biology and Psychology that “Serotonin” is a very good antidepressant but, i don’t know where to get it
Im 17 and i have to be 18 to buy drugs over the counter. But sometimes i can get away with it.

You can’t unless you have a Dr. prescription. Please go to the Dr. they are there to
listen. If you feel uncomfortable, maybe you can find a female Dr. I am on
depression/anxiety meds.

Hello everyone, okay so i have been suffering from severe depression disorder for a while now “few years”, and it has been affecting my ability to study real real bad. i also feel like i have ADD i have made some online tests ” nothing official” and it seemed like i do have ADD. if i only could not focus very well on school then i would say yes maybe it’s depression, but i also keep getting distracted ALL THE TIME, also i cant be in a class i hate being in a class for so long i get bored and because i cannot focus i feel like each hour is 3 years and i simply need to MOVE.

so all of these symptoms made me believe that i have ADD along with depression ” how awesome, huh? “, so i told my psychiatric and she gave me some Ritalin to be taken with the antidepressants i’m on since few years, i was so excited in the beginning but it was awful, i was paranoid all the time and even had to make emergency call to the hospital because i felt very suicidal so i was asked to immediately stop taking Ritalin.

my psychiatric said that i probably do not have ADD, all of these symptoms mentioned above can be also symptoms of depression. and she said she wont put me on ADD meds until i overcome my depression . i understand her but i mean if i really do have ADD i will never be able to study without the meds, what am i suppose to do is it true that these symptoms can be also side effects of depression ?

i also have depression, im noto sure really what the symptoms are alone because i had an ED with my depression, or depression with my ED,, im not too sure but it sounds like it., talk to someone!

Question by : My mother is reacting very strangely to her pill prescription and needs help, anyone with same symptoms help!?
Okay. I am a very concerned son, trying to find out what is going on with my mother, and I’m taking my chances everywhere I possibly can to try to find help. We take her to the hospital and to her regular doctor, almost every other day.
My mother is on antidepressants and other various medications for cancer, kidney and liver failure, and nausea.
Lately, she has been walking around in almost a ‘zombie’ like state, extremely slurred speech, very unstable balance, swollen tongue, nausea, diarrhea, and almost complete memory loss (she doesn’t remember anything she does during this time). She has been like this for almost 4 months, and the doctors have not tried to give us an explanation.
So I’m hoping and praying that someone out there knows what’s going on with my mom, or can at least help point me in the right direction.
We are thinking it is the medications she is prescribed. About 2 months ago, she went into a coma from kidney and liver failure, and I am almost 100% sure it was the medication. 3 months ago, she our house on fire and we lost everything… she has no memory of what happened, nor burning of the house… and I am positive it is the medication.
So will someone out there please help me out, because the doctors she has are not helping her out.
She’s in unbearable pain, and I am very scared I am going to lose her.
I have formed a list of the medications she is on, some of them I don’t know what they are for. This is just 5 of the MANY medicines she is on:

*Doxepin (Anti-Depressant) – “Take 4 times a day before meal & before bedtime.”
-Plus 2 other medications for Nausea & Constipation.
*Sertraline HCL 100mg (I don’t know what this is for, neither does she.) – “Take one tablet twice a day.”
*Olanzapine 15mg (I don’t know what this is for, neither does she.) – ” Take one tablet at bedtime.”
*Alprazolam 2mg (I don’t know what this is for, neither does she.) – “Take one tablet at bedtime.”

Please someone out there help my mom. I’m doing as much research as I can to find out what these doctors are not telling us. I just need help doing that. I am sure her medication is somehow clashing and making her dangerous to herself and others. Thanks for your time.

In previous recordings I have discussed the issue with gluten sensitivity and the differences between that and Celiac disease. And I have also talked about how many children with special needs suffer from the drug like effects on their brain chemistry from the peptides that are found in gluten. Peptides are small amino acid chains. And when gluten is not broken down fully, it can cause an issue where too much serotonin is produced in the digestive tract.

Serotonin is a neurochemical that can affect mood and states of happiness, but it is also influential in learning. For many people, antidepressants are needed to help maintain adequate levels of serotonin. And yet for children with Autism, they may be facing a different problem, they may be producing too much serotonin. Their brain chemistry may not be breaking it down or converting serotonin to its active form. This could contribute to the behaviors we see like self stimulatory behaviors, behavioral issues, obsessive compulsive behavior, attention and focusing problems.

So you see how you can have a build up of serotonin which is not being broken down properly and that is only exacerbated when gluten is eaten. The gluten consumption further stimulates serotonin overproduction in the digestive tract. That serotonin then gets absorbed into the bloodstream and circulated throughout the body. That additional serotonin just adds to the growing pool of serotonin in the body. This can help explain the gluten sensitivity that many children on the spectrum seem to have. You can see how very different this issue is from Celiac disease and why it is set apart from the tried and true methods to diagnose Celiac.

It can be very complicated to understand food sensitivity issues and to understand how food can react in our body. But we understand how in many children with Autism, they cannot fully break down gluten. When that failure occurs, serotonin production in the digestive tract is stimulated. And for many children on the Autism spectrum also have the inability to convert serotonin to its active form. That exacerbates this existing issue of serotonin levels in children with Autism.

Question by LilM777: Need advice/help on appealing denial of STD and LTD coverage due to misdiagnosis of depression?
Last May 2010, I struggled with my mom being disapproved of my recent engagement. I seeked help from a therapist who suggested I try antidepressants to help with my situation. I went to my doctor who gave me the Zung test to determine if I had depression. The results came out in normal range. When I applied for STD and LTD coverage through my work in October 2010, I was denied coverage due to a history of depression. I had selected yes on a question that I misunderstood on my Statement of Health and input information that I had taken anti-depressants. I had only taken the anti-depressants for 2 months as a trial to see if it would help, but it did nothing for me so I discontinued taking them. When I was denied this first time, I went back to my physician to write a note that I was no longer taking the medication and I currently do not show signs of depression. When I receive a decline in coverage again this year, I called the insurance company and based on the wording “currently” does not provide enough validation of not being depressed. They had provided me no further info. I went back to my physician this year to get a new note clarifying my “depression”. The note states: Patient was seen. Scored a ## on a Zung scale being less than 50 being within normal range, no psychopathology, no depression. She has no known history of depression. So, based on my situation with getting coverage and writing my appeal letter. I am not sure how much to include and how much to keep brief. So far what I have in mind are: requesting review of decision, stating it was a situational event with family that caused me to consult with my physician and providing doctors note stating no clinical diagnosis of depression, misunderstanding of question in SOH regarding depression question. Should I explain what the family situtaion is in the letter? What I have now in mind be enough of a strong case? Please help me if I should go in detail or if I have a valid claim against the denial.

Explain everything, don’t just get the notes from your doctor. As an agent, I would have resolved this years ago for you. I have clients who might do on anti-depressants during a rough patch and they are still insurable a few years later.

There might be something else in the notes your doctor isn’t telling you but did report to the MIB (look it up).

Or, since this is a group policy, they aren’t willing to take those extra steps I would to facilitate.

You definitely have a valid appeal, just explain everything in detail.

5-hydroxytryptamine or 5HT, widely known as serotonin, is a neurotransmitter that has a wide-ranging influence over emotional behavior. It also plays a role in metabolism and stimulating vomiting. There are also suggestions that indicate its role in inducing cell division. Although it is present in other areas in the body as well, its presence in the central nervous system and the influence it has on brain functions is the most widely researched.

Serotonin is known to be linked with emotional mood, loss of appetite, temperature regulation, memory, behavior, cardiovascular functioning and muscle contraction. Amongst neurotransmitters, serotonin is the most involved in mental disorders like depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder and schizophrenia. The most striking evidence is provided by a decreased concentration of 5-hydroxyindole acetic acid, a metabolite necessary for the production of serotonin in such conditions.

Medical science has been working overtime to find newer medicines to treat depression with drugs that have fewer side effects. The latest in this field are SSRIs or Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors. These drugs have limited action and work to reuptake only serotonin, thus making more serotonin available to act on receptors in the brain. The efficacy of these medicines has led to their recreational use and for addressing milder problems like lack of self-esteem, fear of rejection, inability to experience pleasure and unresolved emotional grief.

What is not known to all is that SSRIs can interact with other antidepressants like MAOIs, a group of antidepressant drugs that inhibit the action of monoamine oxidase in the brain. These allow monoamines to accumulate, aiding in increased production of serotonin, as it is synthesized from the monoamine L-tryptophan. Excess serotonin activity in the brain and interaction between SSRIs and MAOIs can lead to a potentially life-threatening condition known as serotonin syndrome.

There are safer ways to increase serotonin levels in the body. Natural antidepressants can not only help in treating behavioral disorders and aid in dealing with depression, but they also aid in maintaining general health. 5-hydroxytrytpophan (5-HTP) is a precursor of serotonin and can be used as a replacement for prescription antidepressants. Serotonin is also naturally found in many types of mushrooms and plant foods like fruits and vegetables. Daily exercise is another way of raising serotonin levels naturally. Vigorous exercise not only raises serotonin levels, but also increases production of the neurotransmitter for three to four days after it. The other health benefits of regular exercise hardly need to be mentioned here as they are fairly widely known.
