Kentucky Nursing Home Abuse and Neglect Attorneys Join Call to End Improper Use of Antipsychotic Drugs in Nursing Homes

Kentucky nursing home abuse and neglect lawyer Lee Coleman today endorsed a recommendation to penalize nursing homes that use powerful psychiatric drugs inappropriately to calm patients who have dementia.

“We support the recommendations by U.S. Health and Human Services Inspector General Daniel Levinson that nursing homes that continue to inappropriately drug their residents with antipsychotic medications be denied Medicare payments for these drugs,” said Coleman, of Hughes & Coleman Injury Lawyers, a Kentucky personal injury firm that focuses on protecting the rights and interests of nursing home abuse and neglect victims.

“Medicare officials must step in to curb this dangerous practice, because they hold the purse strings,” Coleman said.

According to a Fox News report, Levinson recently told the Senate Committee on Aging that hundreds of thousands of elderly nursing home patients in the U.S. with dementia regularly receive drugs designed to control hallucinations, delusions and other abnormal behavior in people suffering from schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

Despite repeated government warnings that the practice is unapproved, nursing homes administer antipsychotic drugs to control the aggressive behavior that is sometimes symptomatic of dementia, the report said. Antipsychotics raise blood sugar and cholesterol, often resulting in weight gain and other side effects dangerous to the elderly.

Levinson proposed that Medicare force nursing homes to pay for drugs that are prescribed inappropriately and consider barring nursing homes that continue to use antipsychotics inappropriately from Medicare, according to the Associated Press.

“This is another instance of nursing homes taking the easier way out instead of providing the services to their patients that they are contracted to provide,” Coleman said. “This is elder abuse with potentially deadly consequences, and it cannot be tolerated.”

Hughes & Coleman, with offices in Bowling Green and Louisville, has investigated elder abuse cases in Kentucky and Tennessee and obtained compensation for victims through personal injury and wrongful death lawsuits against nursing homes and similar skilled-care facilities.

“Family members of nursing home patients should ask about the drugs being administered to their loved ones and educate themselves about what the drugs named are meant to do,” said Kentucky elder abuse and neglect lawyer and Hughes & Coleman partner J. Marshall Hughes.

“Legal guardians of elderly relatives have a right to this information and, unfortunately, must be proactive in looking out for the welfare of nursing home residents instead of relying on the home’s staff to always do what’s appropriate.”

Anyone who suspects they or an elderly loved one is being administered improper medications in a nursing home or other care facility, or who is otherwise suffering from elder abuse, should seek the help of a Kentucky nursing home abuse and neglect attorney, Hughes said.

Question by : how can i get hold of AntiDepressants?
I don’t want to go to my doctor because i don’t want to have to reveal the reason why i am depressed. I’ve slipped in and out of depression for the past 5 years. But for the past few months i can be happy one minute, sad lonely and isolated the next, I want to die but i have hope things will one day get better.
I know from Biology and Psychology that “Serotonin” is a very good antidepressant but, i don’t know where to get it
Im 17 and i have to be 18 to buy drugs over the counter. But sometimes i can get away with it.

You can’t unless you have a Dr. prescription. Please go to the Dr. they are there to
listen. If you feel uncomfortable, maybe you can find a female Dr. I am on
depression/anxiety meds.

Question by Max: I feel another ‘bad day’ coming on…?
I’m 21 years old…. I’ve had clynical depression since I was 9… My doctor won’t give me pills because she thinks everyone’s a junkie. My parents don’t care (they think I’m just dramatic) so I’ve also never seen a therapist. I don’t have a job, I’m in college (online, which SUCKS) and I can’t GET a job.

I’m starting to “fade”… … … hard to explain, but its like a signal I get before I have a really bad day (or week, depending on HOW bad) … … I haven’t had one in a while (not “depression-bad” just normal-bad) so I’m really freaking out… my usual “anti-depressant” is being around friends… but I don’t have any left. (They all slowly started ignoring me, so now I have no one and nothing.

I can’t focus, I don’t really eat (my family makes meals & tells me to eat, so I do, but I don’t know if I’m even hungry) and I haven’t had a shower in days… my bed is broken (stupid box-spring broke) so my bed is freakishly uncomfortable and my back has been killing me all day (worse than usual)……….

Right about now (as if on queue) my eyes are trying to fight off tears and I keep spacing out… (And no, I don’t drink or do drugs) and I keep losing my train of thought… … …

I need help, but I don’t know what to do… I don’t want to go to sleep, ’cause tomorrow will start & I really don’t want that.
(My dad seems to think it’s okay to come into a 21 year old’s room & wake her up, telling her to ‘get with the day’ and jump up & do whatever he wants me to, like re-arranging the basement, painting the laundry room, doing dishes, etc without a shower or even change of clothes, without ‘breakfast’ or even a bathroom break…)

I read to fight off my ‘crazy-ness’… I just finished “pretties” by scott westerfield, lol… but it just makes me feel more disconncted… I try to do some of my coursework, but it just makes me paranoid about failing… I don’t know what to do. (Which is why I’m on Y!A… again)

Any advice?

(BTW, I don’t want to hear any crap about religion. Religiously I’m fine & dandy, so don’t waste your time, or you’ll be mocked ruthlessly)

As for the rest… yeah, I can’t “change doctors” ’cause I’m on my parents’ insurance, so they’d have to approve it, & they won’t want to pay my co-pays, and I have no money (no job) SO I’m pretty much SCREWED…

& for the record, I’ve been telling my parents I need therapy since I was in 4th grade. (Which, coincidentally, is when my clynical depression started. I told them I wanted to see someone, ‘get therapy’ etc, but they just rolled their eyes & laughed it off… They’re not too good at seeing/dealing when it comes to conflict.

I have an excuse to get out there though, ’cause I’m thirsty… might as well shower while I’m there. :p

See another doctor. GP’s are not really fully trained in mental health. They should refer you to someone for appropriate help. Keep changing doctors if you have to till you find one who understands. But they shouldn’t really prescribe you anti-depressants. You are better off getting prescribed medication from a psychiatrist. But don’t expect them to do the miracle work for you. If you take them along with councelling or therapy they will be much more effective.

I just got out of a meeting that was dedicated to changing the stigma associated with bipolar disorder. I walked away from the meeting with a new sense of how scattered the bipolar community as a whole is.

If you are an alcoholic, you can go online and find an AA meeting, If you have drugs issues you can find an NA meeting, and the public knows this. But yet, we do not have the same for mental illness. At times it feels like you could go years with out ever meeting someone that understands your situation and is going through the same things you are going through.

Why is it that we don’t have a support system that is on every street corner of America? Instead we sit and let these feelings of isolation bubble up inside of us.

We need a place where those with this issue can get together and talk about the issues that we are confronted with daily.

I walked away from that meeting with a new life lesson “You can’t fix a problem if you don’t know what it is”. Let’s get together and find our common problems so we can take the necessary steps to join together and help each other. We have set up blogs, forums, polls, and provided detailed information that could really change the way that people view this disorder.

ake Your Medicine, Take Your Medicine, TAKE YOUR MEDICINE! Those three little words have been ingrained into the very fiber of my being. Having had bipolar disorder for over two years now it has been drilled into my brain that we, as the unfortunate yet blessed bipolar few, need to always be certain to take those little white pills. Sometimes I wake up in the morning and as I pour the seemingly endless array of pills into my palm for consumption I think to myself “Wow, 22 years young and almost one pill per year of my life”.

The meds I am on now are close to being right but not quite there. The constant motor that my mouth used to be has shut off and I am now content being in the moment. That is the upside to these wonderful drugs, I can live life in a way in which every other “normal” person in the world lives it. Now for the bad. I have gained almost 15 lbs in a month and my long term goals have been put on the back burner and in its place is seems to lie endless bags of cotton candy and sticky candy bar wrappers.

The doctors in this new day and age of medicine must have more balance than a traipse artist at the Ringley Brothers Circus. Too much meds and your metabolic rate drops faster than the stock market of late and your dreams fly away from you as if they never existed. Too little meds…and..well…I won’t even go there…you know what happens. All I can say is that it is very important to keep a dirary of your moods to expidte this “tweaking process”. With a diary your doctor can look at the your moods and match them with the meds that you are on in order to find the best combination.

Its a long and hard road, but with family and friends, anyhting is possbile. God Bless.
