Article by Peter Hutch

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a type of mood disorder. Bipolar disorder was called manic depression in the past, and that term is still used by some people. It is a psychiatric illness that causes major disruptions in lifestyle and health. Everyone has occasional highs and lows in their moods. But people with bipolar disorder have extreme mood swings. They can go from feeling very sad, despairing, helpless, worthless, and hopeless (depression) to feeling as if they are on top of the world, hyperactive, creative, and grandiose (mania).

Bipolar disorder symptoms include depression and feelings of hopelessness during the depressive phase of the condition. Other depressive symptoms include thoughts of suicide, alterations in sleep patterns, and loss of interest in activities that once were a source of pleasure. What differentiates bipolar disorder from major depression is the occurrence of manic episodes, often described as emotional “highs,” between the episodes of depression.

Bipolar disorder results from disturbances in the areas of the brain that regulate mood. During manic periods, a person with bipolar disorder may be overly impulsive and energetic, with an exaggerated sense of self. The depressed phase brings overwhelming feelings of anxiety, low self-worth, and suicidal thoughts. There are two primary types of bipolar disorder. People with bipolar disorder I have had at least one fully manic episode with periods of major depression. In the past, bipolar disorder I was called manic depression.

The average age at which the disorder first appears is between adolescence and the midtwenties. Sometimes a correct diagnosis of the disorder is not made for years. It is complex and difficult to identify. In one study of bipolar disorder patients, half said that they saw three or more doctors before receiving a correct diagnosis. Over one third waited more than ten years before their condition was recognized.

People with bipolar disorder need various types of treatment and support to deal with it. They have to take an active role in understanding and coping with bipolar disorder. Nobody has discovered a cure for bipolar disorder, but we use medications to treat some of the symptoms. Many people who have bipolar disorder live full and productive lives. Yet, tragically, more than one in ten people with bipolar disorder try to commit suicide at some point. It is incredibly important for people with bipolar disorder to take their medication exactly as it was prescribed.

The fact is that bipolar people usually experience manic episodes as well as depressive episodes or symptoms, or mixed episodes which present with features of both mania and depression. They can also have normal mood periods in between these episodes. The DSM-IV-TR lists four types of mood disorders which fit into the bipolar categories: Bipolar I, Bipolar II, Cyclothymia, and Bipolar Disorder NOS (Not Otherwise Specified). Both men and women can have bipolar disorder. People of all ages can have it.

Symptoms of Bipolar disorder

There are many symptoms associated with bipolar disorder. Some of the symptoms are: sad mood, fatigue or loss of energy, insomnia, excessive sleeping, or shallow, inefficient sleep patterns with frequent awakenings, weight gain or loss, diminished ability to concentrate or make decisions, physical agitation or markedly sedentary behavior, feelings of guilt, pessimism, helplessness and low self-esteem, loss of interest or pleasure in life and thoughts of or attempts at suicide.

Question by beautiful & cruel: How do you separate the “stage” and ACTUAL depression?
I see so much questions “How do i know if i am depressed” and the answers follow “You are only a teen, you can get through it, its not depression”. How do you separate feelings of depression from that stage teens go through.
I am just curious..

Best answer:

Answer by katie
I’m not sure there really is a “stage.” I personally suffered from depression from high school, into college, and now as an adult. Some kids just are more intuned with their emotions.

MANY people suffer from depression without even knowing it, or admitting it. Some think you can grow out of it, but honestly, it is a chemical imbalance that can start at any mature age and last for a lifetime. I wouldn’t take any chances, and still seek help. Usually a guidance councilor can detect any real harmful signs of depression and point you in the right direction for seeking help.

There are different types of depression:

Major Depression:
The sufferer seems to walk around with the weight of the world on his or her shoulders. He or she seems disinterested in becoming involved in regular activities and seems convinced that he or she will always be in this hopeless state. There is a lack of interest in sexual activity and in appetite and a weight loss.

Atypical Depression:
Symptoms of atypical depression include fatigue, oversleeping, overeating and weight gain. People who suffer from atypical depression believe that outside events control their mood (i.e. success, attention and praise).

Psychotic Depression:
Sufferers of psychotic depression begin to hear and see imaginary things – - sounds, voices and visuals that do not exist. The hallucinations are not “positive” like they are with a manic depressive. The sufferer of psychotic depression imagines frightening and negative sounds and images.

Dysthymia:
Many people just walk around seeming depressed – - simply sad, blue or melancholic. They have been this way all of their lives. This is dysthymia – - a condition that people are not even aware of but just live with daily. They go through life feeling unimportant, dissatisfied, frightened and simply don’t enjoy their lives.

Manic Depression:
Manic depression can be defined as an emotional disorder characterized by changing mood shifts from depression to mania which can sometimes be quite rapid. People who suffer from manic depression have an extremely high rate of suicide.

Teen Depression or “stage in life”:
Yes, the teen years are tough, but most teens balance the requisite angst with good friendships, success in school or outside activities, and the development of a strong sense of self. Occasional bad moods or acting out is to be expected, but depression is something different. depression can destroy the very essence of a teenager’s personality, causing an overwhelming sense of sadness, despair, or anger. With all this drama, it isn’t always easy to differentiate between depression and normal teenage moodiness. For some depressed teens, symptoms of irritability, aggression, and rage are more prominent.

Read up on it and don’t be afraid to ask a doctor on what the differences are as well.

Good Luck!

Question by : So whats some alternitive medicine for my so called “major depression” and “bipolar”?
I’m starting to believe its all a crock to push pills down my throat. I want a healthier way to feel better.

Best answer:

Answer by The First Dragon
It depends seriously on how serious your bipolar is. Indeed, it depends also on whether the diagnosis is correct. A correct diagnosis is very important, and “bipolar” has become somewhat of a wastebasket diagnosis; i.e., if they don’t know what it is, call it bipolar.
However, if you suffer from major depression and from manic or hypomanic episodes, bipolar affective disorder may be the correct diagnosis.
Even with the correct diagnosis, everybody is different. If your depression or mania are making it hard to function, I wouldn’t say no to medication.
However, there are some natural approaches that can prove extremely helpful. I know one diagnosed “bipolar” man who has learned to manage his illness with exercise and nutrition; especially exercise. I don’t know the details. But he is very successful in his career.
Depression itself often responds to exercise as well or better than to medication, depending on the individual of course. The trouble is that when you are depressed, you tend to lack the motivation to exercise; so you have to discipline yourself. Depression is also helped by exposure to bright light such as sunlight; that is why it gets worse in winter when the days are shorter. I have a “bright light unit” that gives a big dose of bright light in just a few minutes, and stimulates my metabolism significantly. [I have depression, but not Bipolar.] It is also helpful to take 3 high-potency Vitamin B tablets daily, plus 1000 units of Vitamin D. These are known to help brain functioning.
Frankly it is a hard decision, sometimes, as to whether and how much medication to take; as for myself, I prefer to keep it to the minimum I can get by with. This isn’t always wise, though, if you have a severe disorder that may take you unawares.
If you can find a good homeopath, that may be a good option too.
Good luck with it.

Article by Flor Serquina

You may have read plenty of literature discussing the importance of changing your lifestyle and your diet for a healthy mind. These are excellent resources that can help you manage your depression. However, there are times that these alternative modes or natural ways of treating depression are not enough and that the only thing that can help you for the moment is a dose of anti-depression medicine.

Depression and Anxiety – The Basics

To understand how anti-depression medicine can help a depressed person, you must understand how depression and anxiety can strike a person.

It’s not unusual for people of all ages to occasionally experience anxiety and depression. Anxiety is a normal reaction of a person whenever there’s a significant event happening in their life, for example while awaiting the release of a test result a call from a prospective employer. Anxiety strikes when stressors such as these are present. However, normal feelings of anxiety don’t last for long. Right after the test result arrives or that call has been received, anxiety ceases.

However, to some people, when they face these types of stressors, they over-react, become restless and suffer from insomnia. So, even after the cause of anxiety has passed or has been resolved, they remain anxious and they shut down and fall into depression.

Chronic depression and anxiety are two distinct debilitating mood disorders; but for psychiatrists and researchers, these two disorders often overlap, as shown by the illustration above. What’s more, it was found that what could treat depression can also treat anxiety.

Depression may be mild or major. With mild depressive symptoms, a person can do well even with psychotherapy and other natural means (food supplements and meditation). However, in major depression, these are not likely to suffice. You need the help of an anti-depression medicine.

Major and Mild Depression

A person with major depression has a suicidal tendency that must be addressed immediately. People with this type of depression goes into a self loathe stage wherein they want to end everything, the hopelessness and sadness, once and for all. Since they hate themselves and that they feel their depression is caused by their being alive, they will want to end the life that they think causes their misery.

Anti-depression medicine is not just an option for major depression – it is a necessity, without which the hormonal imbalance can not be neutralized.

In fact even in mild depression, a medication therapy could help. If the depression although mild is chronic, meaning the depressed feeling lasts for years, anti-depression medicine can help a person live a normal life especially if he’s falling into major depression during his chronic depression years.

What is the Role of Anti-Depression Medicine?

Antidepressants are designed to prevent hormonal imbalance from happening or to neutralize the imbalance if it is already present. It has been found that hormonal imbalance causes the brain to go haywire and to bring one’s moods to the extreme: whether to extreme sadness or happiness or going into a happy-sad seesaw.

Antidepressant medicine is not the sole source of cure; it is just one of the many means of curing a depressed person. In fact, it only helps in relieving symptoms and not target the root source of the mental disorder.

If you are thinking of undergoing a medication therapy to help you get back on track and be able to live fully without the depression, talk the matter out with your psychiatrist. Weigh everything — the benefits versus the risks – before you decide to have a go with antidepressant medicine. Discuss the pros and cons and ask for recommendations and advice.

Don’t forget to learn about the side effects and what to do if a major side effect is noticed and in case overdose happens. What is important here is you take an active role in your treatment process. By doing so, it will give you strength and courage to face your condition and to achieve your speedy and successful recovery more easily.

Question by some time: If there is no medical disease present, and none that can be proven?
do you think that one should keep saying that there is? Can you answer these:

1. Evidence That Establishes the validity of “schizophrenia” “depression” or other “major mental Illnesses” as biologically-based brain diseases.

2. Evidence For A Physical Diagnostic Exam such as a scan or test of the brain, blood, urine, genes, etc that can distinguish individuals with these diagnoses (prior to treatment with psychiatric drugs), from individuals without these diagnoses.

3. Evidence For a Base-line Standard of a neurochemically balanced “normal” personality, against which an “imbalance” can be measured and corrected by pharmaceutical means.

4. Evidence That Any Psychotropic Drug can correct a “chemical imbalance” attributed to a psychiatric diagnoses, and is any thing more than a non-specific alterer of physiology.

5. Evidence That Any Psychotropic Drug can decrease violence or suicide.

6. Evidence That Psychotropic Drugs do not in fact increase violence or suicide?
“You’ve clearly never met a person suffering from schizophrenia or major depression. I have. You need to meet some of these people, and then form an opinion. I’m a doctor.”

You clearly need to answer these questions and site your sources, and I will have my professional team look at them, I am not a doctor, but I have so many people that I know and have met that have been labeled like this and what you say is not true so what kind of a doctor does this make you? You are wrong in what you do, all people have some problems, but even psychiatrist have come out against what is going on and you know it, if you can answer these questions with more then I am a doctor then answer them on here and site your sources otherwise you need to not answer this. Thanks.
At least please do not expect people to fall for this just because you say that you are a doctor. I know the truth and some of them don’t, and this is unethical of you.
“There are many diagnostic tools…The most important tool is the doctor’s brain,” this is kind of true, so find out the truth get the answer to those questions. You can’t.

“Every medical test has limits. None is perfect” this is not exactly true some are more reliable and valid then others. If you need to cut my toenail off I don’t want you to cut my toe off do I? Is it my heart or lungs or liver?

“I would gather information from a variety of sources, including second and third opinions,” yes, I am sure that you would, but if you don’t have that right then what? “It’s your body,” that is true and that is why this is important.

“You also have the obligation not to expect the government to pick up the tab.” Who do you think is over mental health? Have you ever been poor and needed good health care? “You have the obligation to be truthful,” so do you!

The government owes it to the public to tell the truth and so do doctors and have no right to use coercion and force!
“You seem a little paranoid. What is your point? And start with this: DEFINE ‘medical disease’.” Your actually being silly trying to avoid the truth of what I am saying here. Your thing may say that you are a doc that is hard for me to believe, answer these questions and then I will answer anything that you want me too, that is fair! I have lots of people watching this you all are aware of this right?
Hey QW this was a long answer, but not right for this question.

These medical people can’t answer these questions, they have been asked repeatedly and they know it. If the APA, the Gov., and NAMI can’t answer these questions then no one here can either as far as I know.

Some so say doctors treat people like they are guinna pigs, they do it all the time, like they are no more educated then you. They test theories out on animals and then say it is relative to us human beings and sometimes it is and sometimes not. Then they do small studies and have them published and argue with each other about who is right and the world thinks that they have the answers when they don’t.

They have to stop the misperceptions. Our system is in need of overhaul and someone must hold the medical people accountable for telling the truth and answering the important questions like these that I have posted here several times. Otherwise some people are being misled, perhaps like you?
Reify you are so right and the thing is they are just labeling or calling names when they do this for purposes of insurance companies needing to be billed. After all someone must get paid.

The question you asked I think is, what is normal and what do we actually now mean by crazy or insane? Those are good questions. What do we mean?

What does it all mean besides another way of calling people names and using coercion and force of the courts to make people do what one wants them to do or control others, or take a mind altering addictive pill for which no one really knows how it will affect anyone else.

I do think that sometimes all of us, even the good “doctors”, have problems they may need some kind of assistance with (psychiatrist committ suicide many times),

Asking for assistance now though is even different in meaning then it started out to be isn’t it? If it isn’t really the help that one is asking for or needs, it really isn’t help at all is it?

Best answer:

Answer by Pangolin
You’ve clearly never met a person suffering from schizophrenia or major depression.

I have.

You need to meet some of these people, and then form an opinion.

Clinical depression (also called major depressive disorder, or unipolar depression when compared to bipolar disorder) is a state of intense sadness, melancholia or despair that has advanced to the point of being disruptive to an individual’s social functioning and/or activities of daily living. Depression affects people differently. Some feel down for extended periods of time; for others the feelings of depression come and go. Depression is a mood disorder that causes you to feel sad or hopeless for an extended period of time. More than just a bout of “the blues” or temporary feelings of grief or low energy. Many people identify the feeling of being clinically depressed as “feeling sad for no reason”, or “having no motivation to do anything.” One suffering from depression may feel tired, sad, irritable, lazy, unmotivated, and apathetic.

Clinical depression is not just grief or sadness. Clinical depression is generally acknowledged to be more serious than normal depressed feelings. It often leads to constant negative thinking and sometimes substance abuse. Extreme depression can culminate in its sufferers attempting or committing suicide. There are three main types of depression; unipolar disorder (major depression), bipolar disorder (manic depression) and dysthymia (prolonged sadness). Major depression usually strikes people between the ages of 25 and 44, although it can affect any person at any age. For most people, episodes of major depression last from six to nine months. Feelings of total indestructibility are common, and the manic person may believe for example that not even moving cars can stop him or her, or that he or she can fly. They experience delusions and hallucinations and sometimes talk so fast that their speech becomes illegible.

          ]]>

Causes of Clinical Depression

1. Genetic Predisposition (Hormonal imbalance ).

2. Medical conditions (Neurochemical ).

3. Dietary .

4. Alcohol and other drugs.

5. Sleep quality.

6. Certain styles of thinking.

Symptoms of Clinical Depression

1. Persistent feelings of sadness, irritability, or anxiety

2. Overreaction to irritations

3. Loss of interest in activities previously enjoyed, including sex

4. Sleeping too much, sleeping too little

5. Losing or gaining weight.

Treatment of Clinical Depression

Medication that relieves the symptoms of depression has been available for several decades such as citalopram (Celexa), fluoxetine (Prozac), paroxetine (Paxil), and sertraline (Zoloft). Under some circumstances, medication and psychotherapy may be more effective than either treatment separately. Family of drugs includes fluoxetine (Prozac), paroxetine (Paxil), escitalopram (Lexapro), citalopram (Celexa), and sertraline (Zoloft). These antidepressants typically have fewer adverse side effects than the tricyclics or the MAOIs, although such effects as drowsiness, dry mouth, nervousness, anxiety, insomnia, decreased appetite, and decreased ability to function sexually may occur. Serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) such as venlafaxine (Effexor) and duloxetine (Cymbalta) are a newer form of antidepressant that works on both norepinephrine and 5-HT.Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are medications that increase the amount of the neurochemical serotonin in the brain.

Norepinephrine (noradrenaline) reuptake inhibitors (NRIs) such as reboxetine (Edronax) act via norepinephrine (also known as noradrenaline). Tricyclic antidepressants are the oldest and include such medications as amitriptyline and desipramine. Tricyclics block the reuptake of certain neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine (noradrenaline) and serotonin. They are used less commonly now due to the development of more selective and safer drugs. Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) such as phenelzine (Nardil) may be used if other antidepressant medications are ineffective. Because there are potentially fatal interactions between this class of medication and certain foods, particularly those containing Tyramine. electroconvulsive therapy, are used in severe cases.

Denver, CO (PRWEB) September 02, 2011

One in four families in the United States is touched by major mental illness, and the experience can often be stressful and isolating for families struggling to cope. According to new research to be presented in a free public talk, family-to-family education, led by family members themselves, helps participants to cope, increases their empowerment, reduces stress, and improves problem-solving.

Nationally known researcher Dr. Lisa Dixon of the University of Maryland will discuss her newly published research on Saturday September 10 at the annual meeting of NAMI Colorado, the Colorado branch of the National Alliance on Mental Illness. The talk is the keynote for the annual meeting of NAMI Colorado, and is being sponsored by Colorado Recovery, a treatment program in Boulder for major mental illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depression.

“Professionals have limited contact with families,” Dixon comments, ”leaving them with unmet needs.” Richard Warner, director of Colorado Recovery, adds, “Family members can get very frustrated when professionals cite confidentially laws as a reason not to talk to them.”

The focus of Dr. Lisa Dixon’s research is the NAMI Family-to-Family Education Program, a 12-week course of two- to three-hour sessions. NAMI’s classes address schizophrenia, borderline personality disorder, bipolar disorder, clinical depression, panic disorder, PTSD, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. During the course, family members receive information ranging from treatment options and medications to ways to be effective and supportive of their mentally ill family member. But perhaps most important, they find a place where they can share experiences and support each other.

Dixon’s research shows that family-to-family education

improves empowerment, knowledge and emotion-focused coping of family members
reduces the anxiety and possibly depression experienced by family members and
improves the functioning of family members with respect to problem solving skills
The benefits were still apparent after six months.

According to Alan Johnson, who has led family educations sessions for NAMI-Boulder, “Because of the stigma of mental illness people often don’t have a place where they can be open. When they stop living in silence, they find courage, affirmation, and confidence.”

Dr. Dixon’s talk, “Expanding the Evidence for Family Peer Support,” will take place at 9 a.m. at the Community College of Aurora, 16000 E Centre Tech Parkway in Aurora. It is free and open to the public. Her research “Outcomes of a Randomized Study of a Peer-Taught Family-to-Family Education Program for Mental Illness,” was published in the June issue of Psychiatric Services.

NAMI Colorado provides advocacy, education, and support for individuals of all ages and families impacted by serious mental illness, including psychotic disorders, major mood disorders, and major anxiety disorders. http://www.namicolorado.org

Colorado Recovery treats adults with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or other serious mental illness, at a community-based residence in Boulder, and with intensive outpatient programs and rehabilitation services.http://www.coloradorecovery.com.
