Arlington, VA (PRWEB) April 03, 2012

The Treatment Advocacy Center has named Doris A. Fuller executive director, effective immediately.

Fuller is an author and former journalist whose experience includes advocating for an adult daughter with severe mental illness who received court-ordered treatment because of legal reforms promoted by the organization. She has served as the organization’s communications director since 2010.

“Doris Fuller already has spent almost two years as a daily advocate for improved mental illness treatment laws and implementation in her position as communications director,” said Stephen Segal, chair of the board of directors. “As executive director, she will now be positioned to apply her exceptional vision and leadership to all of the activities that advance our mission.”

Founded in 1998, the Treatment Advocacy Center is the only national nonprofit dedicated exclusively to fighting legal and other barriers to the treatment of severe mental illnesses such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Since its inception, the organization has promoted treatment law reform and implementation in more than half the states in the nation.

Best answer:

Answer by Sam
The dictionary is an alphabetical collection of pretty much every word in a language, except for the likes of l33t and pwned. It doesnt have mental illness because it doesnt do phrases or terms. It does words. You will find mental in the dictionary and you will find illness in there too.

Arlington VA (PRWEB) March 27, 2012

The Department of Justice Programs “Crime Solutions” research into “what works” in criminal justice has determined that assisted outpatient treatment is an “effective” and evidence-based practice for reducing crime and violence, according to the Treatment Advocacy Center, a national nonprofit that supports the passage and implementation of AOT laws.

In making the determination, the DOJ’s Office of Justice Programs cited multiple studies showing that court-ordered outpatient treatment “significantly” reduces arrests for violent offenses, other arrests and violent behavior. In one cited study, the combination of a court order for at least six months and outpatient services, the probability of violent behavior was cut in half.

Assisted outpatient treatment utilizes a court order to provide treatment to individuals who meet strict legal criteria, such as repeated psychiatric hospitalization or arrest. Forty-four states and the District of Columbia currently authorize the use of some form of AOT to provide involuntary treatment in the community.

“Researchers in recent years have erased any doubt that assisted outpatient treatment dramatically improves outcomes for people with severe mental illness who struggle to adhere to treatment,” said Treatment Advocacy Center Policy Director Brian Stettin. “The federal government’s recognition of the growing mountain of evidence that AOT reduces crime is most welcome. We hope the determination will encourage more states and communities to fully implement their AOT laws.”

“Crime Solutions” is “intended to be a central, reliable and credible resource to help practitioners and policy makers understand what works in justice-related programs and practices” and to “assist in practical decision making and program implementation,” according to the Office of Justice Programs website. The Treatment Advocacy Center is the only national nonprofit focused exclusively on eliminating legal and other barriers to treatment for people with severe mental illnesses such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

www.encognitive.com Anxiety and depression in women Depression is a universal experience. We all experience it at some point in our lives. But what causes depression, or why do people get depressed? There are many possible causes to depression and these underlying causes are different, depending on the person. The reasons why you get depressed will likely be different than someone else. Let’s look at some possible causes of depression. –Physiological. We’re familiar with the chemical imbalance theory—low serotonin, dopamine, and imbalances of other neurotransmitters and hormones. The physiological causes of depression can be addressed through a healthy diet. A healthy diet contains all the necessary nutrients to supply your brain with mood-enhancing neurotransmitters, such as serotonin and dopamine. –Biological. You know, we’re depressed because of our genes. This theory has been disproven countless times. Pharmaceutical companies are even trying to convince us that depression is a mental illness and we need drugs to overcome it. Follow the money trail. –Mental. Low mental activity falls into this category. Studies have shown that people are more prone to depression when they use less of their mental faculties. So, play chess, Scrabble, solve puzzles, anything to keep the mind sharp and busy. –Psychological and Emotional. Studies have shown that depression is the result of certain styles of thinking.
Article by Thomas Zinia

Mental health is no less important than physical health. Rather physical health in some way or the other heavily depends on mental health. Therefore understanding one’s mental health is essential. Mental illness is very common these days but hope doesn’t seem to end here. Proper treatment for mental illness along with social awareness make things easy to combat with problems related to mental health.

Mental illness does not only mean anxiety or depression. The root lies in the feeling of not feeling oneself precious. The very sense of feeling oneself valuable brings about self-confidence and also self-discipline. This is considered as the key to mental peace.

Still the world has to learn that mental illness is nothing to be ashamed of. Negative attitude, lack of sense of inclusion is rather considered as the shame for us all. Days passed when a mentally challenged kid was considered as a stigma to the so called civilized society. Still cases are found that go in opposition to our hard earned sympathetic approach towards mentally weak patients. But yes, the cases are comparatively rare.

Let’s Explore…

Mental illnesses are acute among American people. Millions of American people suffer from different mental disorders. But certain treatment for mental illness exists to combat the situation. Mental health disorders include the following:

Autism Spectrum Disorder: It is a neural development disorder generally visible in early childhood before a child reaches three years of age. The signs of Autism become more vivid when a child is 12-18 months of age. Researches reveal that Autism spectrum Disorder (ASD) can be hereditary. Consequently some bear genetic disposition to ASD.

Symptoms:

1. Delay in learning to speak

2. Troubles in social communication or incapability to make acquaintance

3. Occasional or complete absence of eye contact

4. Repetition of language and motor activities (Such as, flapping hands, babbling)

5. Constant fixation on specific parts of an object

6. Fondness to play alone

ADHD: It is clinically termed as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and is common among young people. Around 9% of children between 3-17 and 2%-3% of adults suffer from this disorder.

Symptoms:

1. Predominantly lacking concentration

2. Highly restless/impulsive

Bipolar Disorder: It can be described as a chronic ill health with frequent episodes of obsession and depression that can stay from 1 day to even months.

Symptoms:

1. Abnormal and dramatic mood swinging

2. Lack of energy

3. Inability to sense clearly

4. Succession of high (manic) and low (depressive) moods

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD): It is a disorder related to anxiety in which people suffer from recurring thoughts, manners, ideas, sensations (which causes obsessions), or manners that compel them feel determined to do a particular thing (compulsions).

Symptoms:

1. Compulsions or obsessions not at all related to medical sickness or application of drug.

2. Obsessions or compulsions causing severe distress or impede everyday life.

Other mental illnesses include major depression, panic disorder, Schizophrenia, inclination to commit suicide, and Tourette’s syndrome.

Treatment for mental illness has diverse form of application. Common means of treatment for mental illness include: proper training both for the patient and for the patient’s family, counseling on regular basis, play therapy (for children), Water therapy (for Autistic patients), music therapy and medications.

Question by I love you Norah O’Donnell: Ladies, if your man has a “bipolar disorder”, and CHEATS on you, do you give him a second chance ?
Because we all know that sometimes people have certain mental diseases that can be a challenge in a relationship. But you can have
a healthy happy relationship with a person who has a mental illness.
Now let me ask you this. If you are with a man who has a metal
illness, like bipolar disorder. And you know that he has this. What if
he cheats on you and tells you that he had no control over what
happened. It was not his fault, but it was the polar that did it to you.
What would you do ladies, do you give him a second chance ? Or
what.
It is a tough call. But sometimes you
just have to do what is best for you.
Dealing with these kinds of issues is
not easy. But if you know what you
are getting into, then it is best to
expect the unexpected.
