(PRWEB) April 30, 2012

According to the depression and Bipolar Support Alliance, bipolar disorder affects approximately 5.7 million adult Americans. Growing up with bipolar disorder, Robert Lee Trent had a tough life – one that was only compounded by being surrounded by a toxic family. In his new memoir, “Zero to Sixty in Sixty Years: A Bipolar Success Story” (published by Abbott Press), Trent shares his struggles in overcoming his early setbacks to shape his life into one full of love and happiness.

Trent’s memoir takes shape as a pseudo-narrative, beginning at a high school reunion with his wife. As memories come rushing back, Trent shares a look back at his life with his wife. He recalls his parents’ volatile relationship, a force in his life that only caused drama, pain and sadness. He opens up, revealing the effects of his mental disorder. And he brings the story full circle bringing to light his wife’s crucial role in his recovery.

His life story is impressive on its own, but it is what readers can take away from it that really matters. “It delivers several messages,” says Trent, “from the destruction caused by a violent father and mean spirited mother, the success that can be achieved in the battle with bipolar illness, and that happiness can come at any age, but you’ve got to keep trying.”

Trent recognizes that his story doesn’t carry the clout of a celebrity or notable figure – he is just an ordinary person. But he still has an important idea to share. “In a word, encouragement,” he says. “And don’t just go to sleep at the wheel if you have bipolar disorder. Keep trying until you get some success.”

About the Author

Robert Lee Trent was born January 17, 1948, in Bakersfield, California, to parents who had migrated from Oklahoma to find work. After moving back to Oklahoma, he attended school in Riverdale, a small football town on the banks of the Arkansas River. He and his wife, Jenna, currently live in North Carolina.

Question by : Could I Have MS (Multiple Sclerosis?) At 15? Or is this just anxiety?)?
I’ve had slight, slight pressure on my head. But it’s usually when I’m stressed out by my health. My neck twitches sometimes. But it usually only when I’ve been laying in a weird way or sitting up without neck support. My vision has been affected the most. I’m nearsighted (Have been since I was 11. I’m 15 now.) but lately I’ve been seeing floaters. My primary doctor old me that it’s normal for nearsighted people. I had pressure behind one eye but as soon as I changed the way slept it went away. Also, I’ve been seeing small pinpoint sized lights. I also been having dry eyes but it could be eye strain. I’m on my ipod 24/7. I had my eyes dialated a year ago and I had a normal eye exam in 6 months ago. Everything was ok both visits. I’ve had random pain in my arms. But I haven’t had that in awhile. Lastly, my right foot seems to lean to the side and at times I lose balance because of it at times. Could I have MS? Or could I just have hypochondria? (I fear of having a serious illness ever since I had a panic attack and mono. The fear leads me to the internet and I find diseases that seem to relate to my “symptoms” I’ve become really obsessed with my health and well-being lately.) I plan on having my mother set up an appointment soon just to have a check-up) I honestly think I have an anxiety disorder. But I’m bot sure. Am I sick? Or is this all just in my screwed up 15 year old head?

Answer by SethSpeaks
Nothing at all you have listed sounds like MS. You have anxiety.

Question by abc: Do I have Social Anxiety, or something else?
Basically, these are my “symptoms”:
1) I have trouble keeping calm when I see and when I’m in large crowds.
2) I have a lot of trouble socializing and thinking of what to say in a social situation — so much that it feels near impossible.
3) The muscles in my face tense up when I’m in social situations; I shake a bit, too, out of nervousness.
4) I don’t “know what to do” in social situations a lot of the time, especially when I’m around people who I don’t know or don’t know very well.
5) After eating in a social situation I can’t digest food well, I get stomach aches, I get sick…
6) I’m very unaware in a social setting — I could accidentally bump into someone while walking in a mall, etcetera.
7) ***The more I know someone the more comfortable I am around him or her; the more I’ve been around him or her the less these symptoms show.*** All of these symptoms used to sort of be conscious when I was younger, but now they’re all very sub-conscious. I don’t think about the “fear of talking to someone” — it’ and the rest have just turned into subconscious fears where they’re impossible to control. It’s like I’m fine around someone I trust or when I’m alone, yet when I get into a social setting it’s like a “sickness” comes over me that I just can’t control, even if I wanted to.

These symptoms began to take effect following a rough four of middle school, so it’s not like I’ve had these symptoms all my life or anything. They’ve gotten better in some ways, but in others they’ve gotten progressively worse. Does it sound like I have Social Anxiety, or maybe something else — like panic attacks?

Best answer:

Answer by xxOhkYliexX
I have the exact same problem like no joke talk to a doctor and get some medication for it.

Article by Jennifer Baxt

Bipolar disorder is a kind of depression that can be difficult to handle, especially for those who don’t have a good understanding of what it is. Bipolar disorder, also known as manic depression, is a condition where a person will go through lows of depression and then highs of mania or irritability. People will bipolar disorder will appear hyper in both speech and action during the high and then appear lethargic during a low. They will lack much of a social life, will feel irritable, have mood swings, sometimes have impulsive behavior, have racy thoughts and not sleep as much as they used to. Someone with this disorder will often exhibit two or more of these signs, but few will notice it at first because few understand that these symptoms could be a warning of this kind of disorder.

Bipolar disorder will often develop during the younger years; it could show up in childhood, adolescence and even as late as the early twenties. There is speculation that bipolar disorder could be genetic and is triggered in people with it after they have been through a stressful and/or traumatic situation. It is also thought that drug abuse could trigger it as well. Many who have this particular disorder will not find help, probably because they don’t personally feel that they might have a problem. When left untreated, however, a person’s marriage could be ruined, as well as their schooling, their career and their social life. They can become aggressive, pessimistic and negative toward most things. People will start to avoid them because they will take the fun out of life around them.

Someone who has a friend or a family member should do their best to get this person into counseling. There is, really, very little that a person can do for someone who has bipolar disorder. In most cases, all a person can do is to be as supportive as they can while they try to get this person interested in going counseling. What a person can do is to find out all they can about bipolar disorder so that they can find out if this person really is suffering from this kind of depression. Online counselors are available to answer any questions and concerns that a person may have regarding the illness. One a person determines whether or not they think their friend or family member is possibly suffering from bipolar disorder, than they might be able to persuade the person to consult a counselor. Many people with this kind of disorder will not want to accept that there is anything wrong, so convincing them to see a counselor can be a hard task, but it must be done. Most will be more open to the idea of consulting an online counselor, because it is convenient and also because they won’t have to take too much time and effort to go see a counselor in person. If they can be persuaded to give online counseling a try, they just might be able to get the help and treatment they need.

Question by : Why is everybody now a days so proud of having a so called mind disease called “mental illness”?
Is this part of the story of the land of mental illness or make believe? How do we stop this story that is going around? Do some people need to believe that they have this illness and why? Are the ones that are posting all the information about these so called diseases plants? Is it their mission in life to get more people to believe in the story too?
NAMI is more then 50% funded by the drug companies to promote this illness, the lies are in the textbooks, I have proof that there is no mental illness. Medical feild or not, not half the country has a mental illness or are we all just crazy these days? If you work in the medical feild you get lots of perks for promoting the so called illness too don’t you it is your job!
For a disease to be a real disease it must have some real valid and scientific medical markers such as lessions, growths or tumors, infections like syphyllis and also drug damage, there has to be some way to measure it there is not. these so called medications are harmful and a problem to society.
It is bad when a person actually does have a real brain problem and they can’t get the treatment that they actually need isn’t it? For some they could die from it, like a person with a brain tumor, or epilepsy which I am learning more about.
If you want to know just how ignorant I am go to this link: http://home.earthlink.net/~people-of-cou…
Sorry about that first link I actually copied it from someplace and this didn’t take it let me try this http://home.earthlink.net/~people-of-courage/
“You actually cited a user created page? In that case, I’ll declare being a nazi the greatest thing in the world and make a site of my own saying that. It has to be true if I have a website about it, right?”

thank you for checking it out, that site has been in existance for three years and it also has links to factual information in it, if you want to know what my factual credentials are then you might have to click on that link that talks about who I am and what my professional credentials are, so no it is not just a user created link everyone that does a website is a user of it and creates it themselves, that should not discount the value and credibility of anything, it is there it is your choice to check the info out or not?
“Unfortunately, people like yourself are easily brainwashed.” It’s unfortunate that so many people in our world today hold this position and then say that they are the ones that have this disease, isn’t this suppose to be a disease that makes it so that you can’t think and act rationally in most cases, and are not aware of this, and one that affects your ability to think and live and function in a normal way? I don’t think I want people to believe this stuff about me, like it is being promoted. Yes, I have had more then my fair share of difficulties in life and I have mostly overcome them. Yes, I am a recovered drug user and don’t want more of this pushed on me, so isn’t it actually the people that are trying to promote this and deny that they are proud of having these diseases the ones that are being easily brainwashed? I think it is wrong and harmful and one of these days it just must stop!
Did you learn this propaganda from NAMI? They know nothing either, I have proof of it. ” you are grossly misguided and obviously are not aware of the scientific facts related to mental illness”. Ask them why they can’t answer the hunger strike questions? Then if one sees themselves as mentally ill doesn’t that like I said mean that they are unable to think or act rationally? That they are not aware of their own disease and that is why they deserve to be coercively and forcibly treated against their own will at times? That they should have no right to integrity over their own person according to how others see them? That their feelings are unreal and abnormal? Why would one be proud of that? If it is a brain disease, then why don’t or can’t they find a cure for it? The treatments are no cure they just numb up the persons mind some times people use them in illegal ways just for that purpose because they like it and then they go to jail for it, why?
Mental health “is” subjective so is this “mental illness”, it is not accurate to say that “labeled” people’s brains look differently on any scans consistently. These scans are variable from one time to the next, from one person to the next, over tests over time, they have documented this in research. Asking questions and answering them is the best way to educate and correct the myths out there. Not defensive, corrective of the propaganda, one can not go any place anymore without this kind of assessment and treatment being promoted or pushed on them or someone, it is called “peer” pressure to accept this disease so people can fit in. It is pushed that people have this ” mental illness” or “disease” model of the brain because some organizations are so prominent in society now that it is taking over. Is it better to keep this going? I think not. Yes, I am okay, I don’t think others are okay with me telling the truth about this at times. What is a geranium?
We all should feel offended when good “mental health” is turned into “mental illness” for profit. The fact is there is no valid and reliable medical science for anyone to be called names even “mentally ill”, not you, not me, not the girl or boy next door, not anyone. Feeling sorry for one self at times is okay, it is expression of emotion. Some times it is a joke, but in reality people are not allowed to have a full range of expression or emotion anymore even if they are not hurting them self or anyone else unless they are said to be having a “mind disease” that they may not even realize that they have, one that needs “treatments”. Here is a link to a comic that you all might want to check out: http://www.newstarget.com/021553.html this has to stop so that things can change. So that the real needs, problems, and issues in our world can be addressed and people will stop judging half our world as “mentally ill” for their profit, promotion, or benefit.

Best answer:

Answer by koalatcomics
cmon..its a victimless society…thanks to the liberals you can claim mental illness and get disability and often relief from prosecution of a crime. its never the individuals own fault..its always society. you stop this by calling the clinton ..it takes a village…philosophy what it is…GARBAGE. people need to take responsibility for their own actions and mental illness needs to be a more defined status with less perks for a person to attempt to obtain.
